A few years ago, we greatly increased our production capabilities by purchasing a 3D Printer. This month we began experimenting with consumer-oriented products that would showcase the capabilities of our designers and the 3D Printer. As an experiment, we posted some specially designed dice, like those used to play board games, on the craft marketplace Etsy.
Here is an example of the Steampunk Six-sided Dice:
Not even two days later, we were overjoyed when bloggers started mentioning our products on other web sites. Most notably, BoingBoing.net (in a post by science fiction author and lecturer Cory Doctorow) pointed to our Etsy page after a reader suggested it to him. The post, Brass-effect 3D printed steampunk D6s, sported nearly 50 social media links and several postings on other blogs in the first 8 hours. BoinBoing is one of the top 1,000 websites in the US, and in the top 2,000 websites worldwide. As a result, our Etsy shop page saw nearly 1,000 hits in less than 24 hours.
A small pat on the back is in order. If you would like to see more of our products, branded Mechanical Oddities, visit our Etsy store.
